For women’s knitwear, the most reliable choice starts with three conditions: outdoor temperature, humidity, and how much time is spent moving between outdoors and heated or air-conditioned interiors. Warm weather: prioritize airflow over insulation

Cotton-wool blends are another sensible middle ground. They retain some of wool’s resilience and warmth while reducing the dense, enveloping feel of an all-wool garment. The blend ratio matters: a garment with only a small wool percentage will behave more like cotton than wool, particularly in moisture handling and warmth.

For climates with frequent rain or damp air, avoid assuming that any knit is suitable as an outer layer. Knits absorb water more readily than tightly woven shell fabrics. A cardigan is useful indoors or under a water-resistant jacket, but it is not a substitute for rain protection. Once a thick knit becomes wet, its warmth, weight, and drying time become practical concerns.

Cold, dry winters: use loft and layering strategically

Cold, dry conditions suit wool-rich knitwear particularly well. The useful quality here is loft: the small pockets of air held within the yarn and stitch structure create insulation. Lambswool, Shetland-style wool, alpaca blends, cashmere, and heavier merino can all provide meaningful warmth, but they do so with different textures and maintenance needs.

In a well-designed blend, it can strengthen high-friction areas, improve shape retention, and reduce the risk of a heavy garment becoming distorted over time. A 100% natural-fibre sweater can be beautiful but require more careful handling; a blended knit may perform better for frequent commuting, travel, or repeated washing. Neither option is universally superior.

Climate is only part of the decision

The same climate can require different knitwear depending on personal activity and styling needs. Someone walking outdoors for long periods needs more wind protection and insulation than someone travelling door to door. A knit intended for office air conditioning needs a different weight from one worn for evening outdoor dining. Fit also changes thermal performance: a close ribbed knit holds less insulating air than an oversized brushed sweater, while a cropped cardigan exposes more of the body to changing temperatures.
